- Introduction: The Westside Youth Orchestra will present a free concert of great symphonic masterworks at Park Century School in Culver City.
The Westside Youth Orchestra will present a free concert of great symphonic masterworks at 3:15pm on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Park Century School in Culver City. WYO Music Director and Conductor Lowell Crystal describes the music in the concert as a celebration of life and the holiday season.
The concert opens with Mozart’s Symphony No. 31 in D major, K. 297/300a, better known as the “Paris Symphony”, which Mozart composed in 1778 at the age of 22. The symphony is followed by Holst’s The Planets, Op. 32 (“Mars”). The Planets is a seven-movement orchestral suite and the concert will feature the most powerful movement of the suite, Mars. The score is filled with a highly complex rhythm structure and melodic line that demands great technical skill from all the musicians. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the Solar System and its corresponding astrological character as defined by Holst. The concert also includes excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and Camille Saint-Saëns’s Danse Macabre, Op. 40 which is a tone poem for orchestra, written in 1874. The concert concludes with Alan Silvestri’s Concert Suite, The Polar Express from the film, The Polar Express.
All Westside Youth Orchestra concerts are free to the public and have open seating.
